Doctorate in Journalism

A Doctorate in Journalism is offered by the Department of Journalism which is attached to the Institute of Journalism in cooperation with Taurida National V.I.Vernadsky University.

The Degree of Doctorate in Journalism provides an approach of a multi-disciplinary kind. It covers relationships between media and people in their social, historical, technological, cultural and political contexts. This Doctorate Program in Journalism is geared towards those graduates who have a little experience in broadcasting news and who would like to advance their expertise in this field. The prerequisites for this doctorate program in journalism include a Master’s Degree with good test scores along with writing samples of the applicant and an intent statement.

The curriculum for this doctorate program is based on theory and research. Students have the flexibility of developing their individual plans of how they would like to study based on the goals they have set for their careers. They can pick from various specializations like Gender Issues in Journalism or First Amendment Laws. At TNU, they will have the support and guidance of a faculty committee that serves both as an interdisciplinary and an advisory body.

The main objective of the Institute of Journalism at our school is to connect the strengths of its faculty with intellectual work expected from the students in humanities to develop their understanding of journalism in media and society. Dissertation projects have to be submitted and they could cover various topics such as political culture, the evolution of photographic poses, fake news in the media or a student’s own experience of appearing in news. Common courses in this Doctorate Program would be Media and Culture Theory, Advertising Theory, History of Mass Communication, Telecommunication Laws and Contemporary Issues in the World of Journalism.

For the successful completion of the Doctorate Degree in Journalism, candidates have to display a thorough understanding of the fields of journalism and communications through coursework and research assigned to them in disciplines that may range from sociology to business and from history to international affairs.

The career options popularly available for these graduates include research consultants, university professors, advertising specialists, media analysts and program administrators.

How long should be my thesis?
Usually, it should be from 60.000 – 100.000 words (from chapter 1 to chapter 5). Students are allowed to have 10% less or more, however, the supervisor can allow a student to write more.
