It is founded by Adamu Abubakar Gwarzo, a Nigerian and veteran Journalist. The institution is named after the former first lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hajiya Maryam Sani Abacha for her philanthropic gesture and contribution to the development of the African continent. The University was recommended by Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific research of Niger Republic and also recommended by the Evaluation & Accreditation Division/Education Support Services Department of the Federal Ministry of Education, Abuja.
